Installation Art for doT & associates
At the invitation of government, doTa designed this installation artwork using salt crystals presenting the culture of Budai County, Taiwan. The mahogany wood is used to create a tapered frame that connects the crystallized salt to form a truss structure that can be extended freely. When the sea breeze blows, it rotates according to the wind direction and strength of the wind, chasing the light and the shadow, and the sound of BuDai County.

At the invitation of government, we designed this installation using salt crystals. The salt industry in BuDai County has become a memory, while the sea breeze and sun are still present. The mahogany wood is used to create a tapered frame that connects the crystallized salt to form a truss structure that can be extended freely. When the sea breeze blows, it rotates according to the wind direction and strength of the wind, chasing the light and the shadow, and the murmur of BuDai County.

The salt crystals are polygonal in shape, so the overall shape is a combination of polygons constructed from wood, arranged in an irregular way to show the natural composition of the salt as it is pushed into a pile. The polygon is made of wood to create an outer contour and an inner structure that can interact with the wind, giving the whole piece not only an image of salt crystals, but also a sense of the importance of natural elements to the salt industry in terms of finishing.
Considering the convenience of fabrication, the design of the whole body is composed of only two different components: component A, which is composed of the top and bottom, and component B, which is composed of the middle.
It was built in July 2020 in Taiwan.
In addition to boosting the tourism industry, we hope that through this art installation, people can learn about the local culture and history in a short period of time. Southwest Coast is a coastal township by the Taiwan Strait. The area is mainly a rural area in western Taiwan, with agriculture, fishing, and salt as the main industries. The people who have participated in the salt industry for 338 years have not only left behind a fascinating history of salt industry and a touching salt literature, but also the salt relics that have added a touch of white tone to the southwest coastal sea.
Because the module is not a cube, it will present a multi-angle organic shape after assembly. In production, the wood is not cut at a complete 90 degree angle, but at two special angles that allow the triangular surfaces to be completely reunited. Through the modular approach, the basic shapes are processed in the factory, keeping the on-site assembly time to a minimum.
In order to stimulate the local tourism industry, the government in Taiwan planned a landscape art season and invited four Taiwanese artists to create landscape artworks using a variety of materials such as bamboo, wood, wood chips, iron, woven string, and laser light to illustrate the dialogue between light and shadow. Therefore, we use salt crystals to describe the salt industry scene in the past.
