Short Film for Superhero Me
The film, One More Time, is a letter of encouragement from the Superhero Me community, created during the early period of COVID 19 quarantine. It is also a period where the sense of a human touch is very much needed as everything had to go contactless and digital. To align with this personal and sincere nature of the content, a handmade approach that embraces human imperfection was utilized to create an intimate appeal with an added sense of warmth and familiarity to connect with the viewers. Bright and saturated colors filled the visuals more than dark colors to emphasize the theme of hope.

The brief was to create a letter of encouragement to our friends with special needs during the Singapore lockdown from April to June 2020. It involved narration by the Superhero Me community. From their homes, they voiced struggles with isolation united by a shared perspective of resilience to encourage everyone else facing this global challenge.
special needs, covid 19, pandemic, quarantine film, animation, frame by frame
We started the project by first translating the script into a storyboard. Hand drawn look was decided for the visual next. Light colors were used to create a hopeful feeling. Procreate was used for rough animation. Adobe animate was used to create refined animation. We then render it out and import it into photoshop to draw over with natural media looking brushes. We used After Effects for some of the 3D looking parts of the animation, animation that is not as fluid, and to do compositing.
The challenge was finding a hopeful message, which is the core message of the film, to spread when the news of Covid 19 pandemic just hit the world. It was especially hard when doom and gloom were everywhere.
The film was made all on remote with creatives from Singapore, The Philippines and the US. Voices and script were provided locally in Singapore. The project began in May 2020 and was completed in August 2020.
The film is made to play on social media platforms such as Vimeo and Facebook. 24 frames per second.
Type of Research. Combine hand made animation with digital animation. Leveraging on digital and traditional techniques, to create a film that looks personal and warm, yet completed in a faster manner. Research objectives. To create traditional looking animation using digital software to work efficiently and communicate the message of the film effectively. Methodology. Digital software such as After Effects reduces the laborious part of traditional animation technique.
COVID 19 has wreaked havoc on the world with no end in sight. As Superhero Me's mission of fostering a more inclusive Singapore is dependent on bringing together children with and without special needs, this pandemic, and its accompanying isolation has brought significant struggle to its community and efforts. The inspiration to create this film was to spark positivity and find ways to reduce the feeling of isolation, not just for the community but for the rest of the world.
