Artwork for Hubert Roguski
CityWood is a wooden map artwork designed by an architect Hubert Roguski. It is a three dimensional design that combines modern technology with the beauty of wood and craftsmanship. Created from a city data, city streets, water and landscape are represented by separate wooden layers to create depth of the design. Each layer is precisely cut using laser technology, polished with sand paper to provide smooth clean surface and assembled by hand with great attention to the crafting process. Each map has its own personality due to the individual grain of the wood.

The design is a multilayered city pattern object framed in wooden frame. Each layer of polished fine quality plywood is cut using laser technology.
The final design is a product of a long battle between wood and city pattern. To find this unique proportion of width and depth of the each street, many prototypes were created. The color of the wood of each layer makes the whole design readable and visible as a city map.
The project started in May 2017 in Warsaw, Poland.
The wood art depending on its size can hang or stand on the desk. Whether in the living room, dining room or office space.
The map itself is a beauty. I wanted to transfer it to a three dimensional object. My long study of maps and GIS technology made it possible to acquire a current maps of the cities. Using laser technology I was able to create a layered model of a city. Wood is a uniquely patterned natural material and it was chosen for this design. It gives an additional rare value for each work.
Inspired by a actual city the project shows a city space as a 3d object. Thin yet very complex street pattern, cut in wood layers looks like minimalist modern abstract art.
