Visualising Book Layout for Jiayi Li
The book is divided into pre, mid, and post-stages. These three stages also apply to the various stages of Alzheimer's disease. Different design approaches are used in different stages. Combining tracing paper, a very fragile material, at an early stage can show the vulnerability of people with Alzheimer's disease. The temperature sensitive ink are combined with text in the mid-stage. When one places one's hand on it, writing appears. In the late stages, the book is combined with fire. Burned paper is irreparable, as is the patient's ability to remember at this stage.

In this project, the design concept is to visualise the memory loss process of patients with Alzheimer's disease in the form of a book and to combine Command Z with the love story of a couple who suffer from the disease to raise awareness of Alzheimer's disease.
Many approaches were used in the production. For example, variable temperature inks, blank pen marks (pencil print), polaroid photos and combining the book with fire.
There are ways of interacting in this book. Firstly, about temperature-sensitive ink. The temperature-sensitive ink can change with the temperature. When people put their hands on it, the text appears. Secondly, to make a pen mark, you need to overlap two blank papers. Using a pencil, one writes on the top piece of paper. The paper below will leave blank handwriting; when people want to read the paper with the blank script, can scribble on the paper with the pencil to get the information shown.
Alzheimer's disease is a progressive brain disease. While ageing, the patient's brain will gradually degenerate and seriously affect daily activities. Therefore, Alzheimer's disease has become the most common form of cognitive impairment. In the research process, I found an old couple from Taiwan who is like the old version of " A Moment of Remembrance". Even though they lost their memory due to illness, their love for each other is too deep to be changed.
Command Z Visualising Book Layout has been a Bronze winner in the Social Design award category in the year 2022 organized by the prestigious A' Design Award & Competition.
