Public Installation for AMTR
The Conch combines nature's beauty with mathematical precision, featuring an elliptical Fibonacci spiral resembling a conch, infinity symbol, or musical note. Designed with parametric software, it consists of 30 layers of elliptical metal rings stacked precisely for a light, rhythmic structure. Concealed water pipes in the base create a hidden fountain at the sculpture's center. Symbolizing natural growth and cosmic energy flow, the spiral inspires contemplation on mathematics, nature, and aesthetics, enhancing urban landscapes with deep symbolism and cultural significance.

The "Conch" installation blends nature's beauty and math, employing Fibonacci spirals reminiscent of conchs, infinity symbols, or musical notes. Concealed nozzles create arcs, extending natural curves into the pool, enhancing vertical space. The spiral symbolizes nature's vitality, epitomizing the Fibonacci sequence, inviting viewers on a journey of nature and math. Celebrating mathematical rhythm, nature's splendor, and human creativity, it prompts contemplation of math, nature, and aesthetics.
Public Installation, Stainless steel, Urban sculpture, Fibonacci, Abstract composition
"The conch" uses the rich composition formed by a single material and form element in space to interpret the beauty of profound natural laws. Through the simulation of parametric software, the 30 elliptical metal rings are stacked layer by layer in a step-by-step manner according to specific angles and heights, and the thickness also gradually becomes thinner from thick, so that the structure is more stable and easy to fix, and the form also appears to be more lightweight and full of rhythmic changes. The metal rings at different angles are connected by welding, and finally the whole is polished so that it can reflect the rich ambient light. At the same time, a water pipe is cleverly hidden in the relatively thick metal ring at the bottom, and this water pipe extends to the middle position of the sculpture, and then forms a small fountain device.
Although "Conch" is a theme with a very concrete concept, we hope to present the abstract form with the beauty of nature and mathematics here by means of modern visual language, so as to make it a landscape sculpture with a humanistic theme in the city. Visitors can observe different forms from different angles, which can arouse people's curiosity about nature and mathematics. In the production process of the sculpture, the metal rings must first go through computer simulation calculation, and then be precisely cut by using a CNC machine according to the design drawings, only in this way can it be ensured that the transition between different metals presents a natural and smooth state.
This project started to be designed and produced in October 2022, and was completed in Xiamen in November 2022.
This sculpture attracts and firmly grasps the end users through its unique shape, beautiful geometric aesthetics and flowing fountain design. The diverse shape attracts people's curiosity and desire for exploration. And the fountain design adds a flowing dynamic and vitality to the installation, making it more eye-catching and attractive in the urban landscape.
The creation of the entire sculpture depends on computer parametric design. The rotation angle and height of each component are accurately calculated through mathematical formulas. The application of parametric not only can conduct intuitive simulation of the shape and style, but also can achieve accurate cutting and positioning of the joints between the metal rings in the future construction process, and can present the final visual effect and the details to be noted during construction at the early stage of design.
The Conch art installation merges natural aesthetics with math in urban environments, inspiring reflection on natural patterns and their mathematical roots. Dynamic elliptical components create visually captivating structures, evolving with perspective shifts. It fosters appreciation for mathematical harmony in nature and urban design, offering contemplative space. Its modern yet timeless design ensures lasting impact.
