The design research for the Artalex ET 101 smartwatch face was grounded in a combination of qualitative and observational studies. The objective was to integrate Bauhaus principles into a functional, visually appealing smartwatch interface that balances art and practicality. Methodology: Researchers studied historical Bauhaus works and modern smartwatch designs, analyzing how geometric forms, clean lines, and minimalism could meet contemporary user needs. Data Collection and Tools: Data was collected through user surveys, focus groups, and usability testing, using prototyping tools like Facer to visualize and refine ideas. Participants: The study involved a diverse group of smartwatch users, including professionals, fitness enthusiasts, and casual users, to gather broad perspectives. Results: Insights revealed that users value clear layouts, readable fonts, and engaging visual cues for fitness tracking. The lowercase font and the progress ring for step goals emerged as user-preferred features. Impact: The research bridged Bauhaus ideals with modern functionality, resulting in a smartwatch face that enhances user interaction and daily productivity. Its design impacts business by aligning with minimalism trends, society by promoting health awareness, and design by merging timeless principles with contemporary needs.
The design is inspired by the Bauhaus movement, celebrated for its fusion of functionality and artistic expression through geometric shapes and clean lines. This influence is evident in the intersecting lines and segmented layout, which create a balanced, structured, and modern aesthetic. Minimalism further shapes the design, ensuring clarity and elegance. The use of all-lowercase typography enhances readability while adding a contemporary, approachable touch. Additionally, the step goal indicator subtly integrates health tracking into the Bauhaus-inspired framework, combining practicality with timeless design principles.
