Exhibition for STUDIO KAZ

Tango Chirimen, soaked with images projected by projection mapping, was used as a psychological boundary. The extremely thin cloth fluctuates with the slightest movement of air, such as the movement of a person, and responds to the movement of the cloth interactively by means of sensors embedded in the cloth. The material used for the floor is a decorative plywood made by pasting rush grass, which would normally have been discarded, onto plywood because it was not long enough to fit into the tatami weaving machine.

Unique Properties

Tango Chirimen, soaked in images projected by projection mapping, is used as a psychological barrier. The extremely thin fabric sways with the slightest air movement, and sensors embedded in the fabric react interactively to the movement of the fabric. The floor is made of an original material called "IGUSA-faced plywood", made by gluing rush grass that would have been discarded because it was too long to fit into a tatami loom onto plywood.

Production Technology

We used Tango Chirimen imbued with projection-mapped images as a boundary. Sensors embedded in the tango crepe detect the slightest swaying of the cloth and respond interactively The floor is made of decorative plywood made from rush grass from the wada family in kumamoto, which could not fit into the tatami loom because it was not long enough and had to be disposed of.

Design Challenge

The internal factors 1. Identifying the essence of the tea ceremony. 2. Knowing the history and components of the tea room. 3. Understanding and mastering the tea ceremony itself. the external factors 1. Adjusting the signals from the sensors embedded in the fabric to reflect them in the program of projection mapping . 2. The technique of kneading rush grass onto plywood. 3. Adapting to an experiential exhibition space. 4.Use sustainable materials and methods consciously.

Project Duration

This project took place from October 18, 2024 to October 27, 2024 in Tokyo, Japan.

Operation Flow

Sensors embedded in the tango crepe detect and quantify the shaking of the cloth, and by incorporating these values into video and music programs, the images and sounds can be changed interactively.

Research

The spirit of the tea ceremony is the spirit of "omotenashi" (hospitality). The purpose of the tea ceremony is not to drink tea, but to “entertain” the guest through the act of drinking tea. For this purpose, everything in the tea room, from the entrance, to the alcove, hanging scrolls, flowers, incense, clothing, and various manners, are mobilized to provide hospitality.

Inspiration

The tea ceremony is not only a ritual of tea, but also a way to entertain guests with tea. The guest is also a part of the creation of the tea ceremony. We design the tea ceremony room for this mentality. The rule we decided on was to use Japanese materials but not to assemble them in a Japanese way. The tea ceremony room is constructed of veneer plywood made of rush, the material used for tatami, and a cloth soaked with images that change interactively to create a psychological boundaries.
