By fostering meaningful, real-world connections, the app connects like-minded individuals experiencing loneliness through structured weekend retreats in nature. What sets Serenity Sojourn apart is its integrated mentor feature, where each user is paired with a psychologist or trained guide after their personality type is identified. This mentor provides personalized support, helping users manage initial anxiety and social stress, making the process of connecting with new people more comfortable and positive. The app’s AI-driven matching system ensures compatibility based on personality, interests, and location, creating curated experiences tailored to each group. By merging technology, psychology, and nature, Serenity Sojourn offers a holistic approach to combating loneliness, promoting well-being, and redefining social wellness through meaningful in-person interactions.

Production Technology

Serenity Sojourn was developed using human-centered design principles, integrating AI-driven matching algorithms for optimal user compatibility. The design process involved extensive user research, Keirsey personality analysis, and iterative UX prototyping. Tools like Figma, ProtoPie, and Illustrator were used for wireframing, prototyping, and interface design, while AI-powered tools like Midjourney assisted in visual storytelling and concept development, ensuring an engaging and intuitive user experience.

Design Challenge

The biggest challenge was encouraging lonely individuals to engage with the app. To overcome this, I designed the personality questionnaire in an engaging way, where users receive instant insights about their personality type, ideal retreat location, and compatible like-minded individuals. This interactive approach builds curiosity and motivation, encouraging users to continue exploring the app while fostering a sense of belonging and excitement about real-world connections.

Project Duration

The project started in October 2023 in Detroit, USA, and was completed in May 2024.

Operation Flow

Serenity Sojourn guides users through a seamless process. They create a profile, input their interests, hobbies, and location, and complete a personality-based questionnaire. The app’s AI-driven system then suggests like-minded individuals and the best retreat locations based on their preferences and personality type. Users can explore curated weekend retreats, book effortlessly, and engage in real-life experiences that foster deep connections, meaningful conversations, and social well-being.

Research

This research used qualitative and quantitative methods to explore loneliness, digital socialization, and nature’s impact on well-being. Interviews with psychologists, individuals experiencing loneliness, and outdoor activity enthusiasts provided insights into social withdrawal and real-world connections. Surveys, user testing, and AI-driven analysis shaped the app’s matching algorithm and retreat selection, proving that real-life interactions improve mental health and social fulfillment.

Inspiration

The inspiration for Serenity Sojourn stemmed from observing the growing issue of loneliness, particularly among young adults, despite the prevalence of social media platforms. Research highlighting the negative psychological impacts of digital overuse and the false sense of connection created online further shaped the concept. I was motivated to design a solution that replaces passive digital interactions with meaningful real-world experiences, while recognizing the positive effects of nature and personality-based compatibility on mental well-being. By combining psychology, technology, and nature-based retreats, the project seeks to redefine social wellness in a way that fosters genuine human connection.
