Production Technology

They have developed a graphic design centered around typography that multidimensionally leverages both the artworks created by two artists and the classical texts held by the National Institute of Literature Research. The poster, while maintaining its function as printed material, uses special ink and paper that demonstrate consideration for the environment. As a result, it not only fulfills its role as a poster but also reflects a high level of consideration in projects related to national involvement.

Project Duration

The project was launched in 2017 to open up the collection of classical books and the network of specialists cultivated by the National Institute of Japanese Literature to non-researchers. The exhibition was part of that project, inviting two artists and being held for one week from January 11 to January 17.

Operation Flow

The poster is a special design that combines old-fashioned lacquer art and modern oil painting, nature and humanity. It presents a harmonious blend of old and modern styles, illustrating the integration of books, literature, and art. This design reflects the artists' contemplation on ancient stories and themes, clearly demonstrating the significant influence of traditional culture on their artwork.

Inspiration

The project is a residency program conducted by the National Institute of Japanese Literature, a research institute that seeks out and researches classical books, which are the life, spirit, and cultural heritage of Japan, and makes them available to the public both in Japan and abroad.

Project Overview

Darkness and Light Poster has been a Bronze winner in the Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design award category in the year 2023 organized by the prestigious A' Design Award & Competition. The Bronze A' Design Award is given to outstanding designs that showcase a high degree of creativity and practicality. It recognizes the dedication and skill of designers who produce work that stands out for its thoughtful development and innovative use of materials and technology. These designs are acknowledged for their professional execution and potential to influence industry standards positively. Winning this award highlights the designer's ability to blend form and function effectively, offering solutions that enhance people's lives and wellbeing.
