The console is equipped with two drawers and two doors. The drawer fronts are adorned with sculptural representations of a woman’s lips. These lips are polished to a high gloss, creating contrast against the darker patina. Supporting the console is a hand sculpture, also cast in dark patina bronze. Its index finger delicately touches the lower lip, creating a dynamic interplay of form and symbolism. The nails are polished to a high gloss, adding a touch of refinement to the organic form.
Ensuring the console’s stability while maintaining its sculptural elegance was the most challenging aspect of the design. Extensive research and structural testing were required to balance weight distribution and prevent tipping. Additionally, developing a seamless yet functional way to open the lower drawer led to the integration of a pivot mechanism, requiring precision engineering. Material constraints, production feasibility, and ergonomic considerations all influenced the final solution.
This project originated from an idea conceived during a stay in Madeira in March 2022. The initial concept took shape and was later further developed in Warsaw, Poland. Over approximately nine months, the design process evolved through research, prototyping, and refinement, ensuring both aesthetic and functional integrity. Each stage was carefully executed to achieve a balanced fusion of artistry, stability, and innovative interaction.
The operation, flow, and interaction of this console are centered around both its functional and aesthetic elements. The console serves as both a decorative and functional furniture piece. Users interact with it by placing decorative objects on its surface. The storage compartments provide space for organizing smaller items. To access the lower drawer, the user must pivot the index finger to the right side. The bronze material provides a tactile experience enhancing the sense of craftsmanship.
This study explores the design, functionality, and interaction dynamics of a console that integrates artistry with practicality. The research delves into material selection and ergonomic considerations, analyzing how bronze’s durability and evolving patina contribute to the console’s aesthetic and longevity. The study examines the relationship between form and function, demonstrating how the console transcends conventional furniture design to become an interactive statement piece.
The design of Curious is rooted in the observation of a young woman whose charm and inquisitiveness left a lasting impression. Her expressive features, particularly her lips, and the graceful gestures of her hands, inspired the console's form. The upward-pointing finger of the hand base reflects her contemplative nature, while the lips on the drawer fronts symbolize her alluring yet curious demeanor. This piece embodies the duality of strength and delicacy.
