Young Yogi and the Mind Monsters

Book Illustration for Atmosphere Press, Sonja Radvila

Kaori was inspired by Indian folk art characterized by vivid colors and naive composition. Through her illustrations, she tried to depict the story based on Patanjali's Yoga Sutra and show that people make their reality which all depends on their perceptions. So Kaori drew the dreamy and imaginary scenery based on the storyline. She remembers how things look and feel in her childhood, reality full of magic and colors. She expressed how the mind shapes reality so that kids can overcome their fear of mind monsters.

Production Technology

Kaori read the script and came up with sketches of all the characters with the writer's direction. When the designs were approved, the artist sketched the storyboard for each chapter. Then she created illustrations in pencils and papers and colored them in Photoshop and Illustrator.

Design Challenge

Since it was a collaboration with a writer, the artist had to imagine what the writer is imagining. But she was very open to what the artist brought to the table and worked beautifully together.

Project Duration

The writer approached the artist in 2015, and they have started working on character designs. With many backs and forth and story changes, Kaori wrapped up the illustrations in 2018. With crowdfunding, the writer found a publisher to publish the books.

Operation Flow

The writer pitched to a crowdfunding website called Publishizer, and Atmosphere Press published it. They are sold worldwide on Amazon and Barnes and Noble etc.

Research

Kaori read Patanjali's Yoga Sutras and study Yoga philosophy and Indian culture and art. She also tested her illustrations using a different medium to achieve the right feel for the story.

Inspiration

A whimsical story, "Young Yogi and the Mind Monsters," was written by Sonja Radvila to understand the rich, ancient, and mind-bending philosophy of Patanjali's Yoga Sutras. The story is filled with colorful visual and profound questions about how the mind works. As an illustrator interested in Yoga Sutras' philosophy and meditation, it was easy for Kaori to imagine each scene with a clear image.
