Production Technology

I began by researching the history of The National Gallery, identifying key themes and concepts that best represent the institution. Subsequently, I engaged in brainstorming sessions and ideation, continuously refining the logo design to ensure it encapsulated the essence of the institute. My aim was to craft a logo that resonated with the values and identity of The National Gallery.

Transform a typography-based logo into an iconic logo.

Project Duration

This project started in Feburary 2023 and finished in May 2023.

Operation Flow

Creating an iconic logo ensures instant recognition, fostering a lasting impression among audiences. With this rebranding logo, our aim is to enhance The National Gallery's global visibility and recognition.

Research

The National Gallery holds significant historical value, housing Western painting collections from the 13th to the 19th centuries. It distinguishes itself from the Tate museum, which focuses on art collections from the 19th century onwards, particularly emphasizing classic aesthetics. While most national galleries highlight initials or architectural features in their logos, The National Gallery's architecture lacks distinctiveness. Hence, I opted to integrate painting elements into the logo, accentuating its unique focus on paintings. The addition of seven lines and framing elements further enhances the logo's representation of The National Gallery. Additionally, we decided to remove "The" and add "London" to improve online visibility, as search results often prioritize galleries from other countries over the London-based institution. We envision the final logo to preserve the classic characteristics of the National Gallery while giving it a more modern direction for global promotion.

Inspiration

The remarkable painting collection housed at The National Gallery inspired my mission to boost its global recognition. Upon noticing that online searches often led users to other National Galleries, I saw an opportunity to rebrand and increase its distinctiveness. Drawing from its extensive painting collection, I sought to infuse this essence into the logo design. My goal was to ensure that the logo immediately resonated with visitors as belonging to The National Gallery.

Project Overview

The National Gallery Visual Identity has been a Iron winner in the Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design award category in the year 2023 organized by the prestigious A' Design Award & Competition. The Iron A' Design Award is awarded to good designs that meet the rigorous professional and industrial standards set by the A' Design Awards. This recognition is reserved for works that demonstrate a solid understanding of design principles and show creativity within their execution. Recipients of the Iron A' Design Award are acknowledged for their practical innovations and contributions to their respective fields, providing solutions that improve quality of life and foster positive change. These designs are a testament to the skill and dedication of their creators, showcasing their ability to address real-world challenges through thoughtful design.
