Lucky Bread is a unique, handcrafted gift inspired by traditional Cretan wedding bagels, where each bread is adorned with intricate symbols that convey messages of fortune and new beginnings. The design stands out by combining ancient artistry with modern personalization, using symbols such as the lotus, dragonfly, and tree of life to reflect optimism, protection, and transformation. The bread is presented in a beautifully illustrated box, further enhancing its uniqueness and cultural significance.
Lucky Bread, traditional Cretan wedding bread, artisan craftsmanship, symbolic bread design, wedding bagels, prosperity symbols, handcrafted bread, corporate gift, Cretan traditions
The Lucky Bread project involved collaborating with traditional Cretan artisans, known as "xompliastres," who meticulously hand-shaped and decorated each bread with meaningful symbols. The bread was made using traditional dough and carefully molded into intricate designs, reflecting ancient craftsmanship techniques. The packaging features detailed illustrations of the symbols used, creating a cohesive visual narrative. The process required close collaboration with artisans to ensure the symbolic intricacies and cultural integrity were preserved.
The hardest part of baking a custom bread such as this is to create new and unique symbols our of dough. The artisans had to change their kneading habit of the ordinary symbols and turn to something new, more intricate.
This project started in March and finished in October in Athens and Crete. It was sent to 150 clients.
This is a box full of symbolisms. When the user opens this box and finds a ring made of bread with the same symbolisms that exist on the box. Inside also one finds a leaflet which explains every symbolism. All the symbolisms are for good luck.
Based on the team's different places of origin, we researched the local customs and we selected the most interesting one. A special bread ornamented by women and offered usually at weddings. This bread-ring is first shaped out of dough and then each woman crafts an ornament. We gave the women our own symbols to craft and place on the main body. Stamatakis Cretan bakery baked and placed them in the box we had manufactured. In this form, fresh and cased it was delivered to our clients.
The inspiration for the Lucky Bread project came from a desire to preserve and celebrate the vanishing art form of traditional wedding bagels crafted by the artisans of Marathos, Crete. This project reflects a deeper cultural homage, where symbolism, craftsmanship, and personalization converge to create a unique product. Each ornamented bread piece conveys messages of prosperity and success, bringing together ancient symbolism with modern gifting traditions.
