Children On The Move

Publication for United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF)

Children on the move face severe risks, yet reliable definition and data for protection is lacking. To address this gap, Idac (a cross-sectoral global coalition jointly led by Eurostat, Iom, Oecd, Unhcr and Unicef), released this publication, offering essential definitions, data, and practices. Three isometric infographic illustrations are created to define, distinguish and explain the various situations and statuses of children on the move. Standardizing migration terms is crucial for accurately identifying and supporting these children, ensuring evidence based policies for their wellbeing.

To address this, IDAC released the publication Children on the Move: Key Terms, Definitions and Concepts, providing essential definitions, data, and best practices. The publication urges stakeholders to collaborate on improving data collection and use. Standardizing migration terms is key to accurately counting and supporting these children, ensuring evidence-based policies for their wellbeing.

Production Technology

Adobe Illustrator is the major tool used to create the isometric infographic illustrations. Adobe Indesign is mostly used for layout design of the publication.

Design Challenge

Migration and displacement terms are often defined inconsistently across institutions, laws, and organizations. However, without clear and standardized definitions, accurately assessing the number and circumstances of migrant and displaced children is impossible. This reference document aims to establish a shared understanding of children on the move—who they are, the subgroups they belong to, what differentiates them, and how they are counted (or not counted). It also clarifies key migration terms related to children, organizing them into the following color-coded categories: Blue: International migrant children Red: Children in need of international protection Yellow: Internally displaced children Green: Children indirectly affected by migration and displacement Orange: Other groups of children on the move Purple: Children in highly vulnerable situations The isometric illustration presents each migration term in a clear, informative, and engaging storytelling format, earning widespread praise from stakeholders and organizations. Additionally, the publication provides the latest global data on critical subgroups of children on the move and highlights particularly vulnerable groups for whom data remains scarce or unavailable.

Project Duration

The project began in May 2023 in New York, USA, and concluded in August 2024, also in New York. It was later showcased at multiple UN locations, including New York and Copenhagen, as well as at the second IDAC Annual Conference in December 2024 in Morocco.

Operation Flow

The publication is open to IDAC organizations and stakeholders for collaboration in enhancing data collection and utilization. Standardizing migration terms is essential for accurately identifying and supporting these children, enabling evidence-based policies that safeguard their well-being.

Research

The brief begins with a conceptual framework that illustrates IDAC’s definition of children on the move, identifying the key groups that comprise this large and diverse population. It then defines, discusses and presents the latest global data for each of these groups, highlighting the children on the move for whom there are limited or no available data. Sample scenarios are included to illustrate how this terminology can be applied to real-life situations and how children may shift from one category to another. The brief concludes with a table summarizing the data and the data gaps for each of the groups of children discussed. This reference document covers a broad range of terms frequently used to describe and count various subgroups of children on the move. It is important to note that migration terms may be defined differently according to their purpose – legal, statistical and conceptual definitions can vary substantially, which may be necessary to serve distinct ends. IDAC uses an inclusive approach for its definition of children on the move to ensure that all groups of children directly and indirectly impacted by migration and displacement are counted and protected.

Inspiration

These isometric illustrations visually define the experiences of children on the move across three scenarios: armed conflict, climate crisis, and pandemics. With vibrant colors and detailed compositions, they effectively communicate terms, definitions, and data, offering an informative and insightful perspective. The design balances clarity and depth, making complex issues accessible while emphasizing the urgency of these global challenges.
