Posters for Liudmila Shurygina
The idea of the designer behind the opera posters was to create an iconic portrait of a singing/shouting woman, the main figure in opera plot, as a symbol of uncontrolled passion. The goal was to show the tragic and dependent role of a woman in libretto of such operas as Madame Butterfly, Tosca or Norma in the form of iconic and expressive interpretation. On all posters the composition represents the final scene - culmination moment of the opera story. Designer was inspired by the suprimatic posters of Kazimir Malevich and by the painting of Edvard Munch "The Scream".

The posters were created by designer with Adobe Illustrator software.
The challenge in this project was to find an icon which can illustrate the tragic opera plot.
The project has started a year ago. Location: Amsterdam
The posters are designed as for print production as for digital. They are designed for the city displays, as a part of the concert identity for the brochures and banners. But also for the website and digital promo campaign. The posters can also be transformed into animated graphics for the city displays.
Research was based on exploring the avant-guard style and also the latest trends in contemporary visual language. Also iconology and expressionism were the topics for research.
Designer was inspired with the portraits of Malevich due to the minimalist iconic shapes and the painting of Munch "The Scream" due to the open emotional expression. Also the big sourse of inspiration was Memphis style - open colours, contrast, simple shapes.
Madame Butterfly Posters has been a Golden winner in the Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design award category in the year 2020 organized by the prestigious A' Design Award & Competition.
