Wheelchair Simulation System for RDS Co., Ltd.
SS01 is a measurement system designed and developed to improve sitting especially for person who use wheelchair. The simulator came into the world, driven by the development of WF01TR, a wheelchair for racing. It obtains a wide range of personal data, such as 3D data of the body shape contacting with a seat in a sitting position, the rotating speed and torque of each wheels, and shift in the center of gravity of the subject. It is possible to arrive at a personalized optimum solution by precisely adjusting the positions of a seat, seatback, step, and a camber angle based on the data.

It works as a kind of robot which have 15 actuators moves part of seat and the torque of rotation of wheel in just a seconds and several sensors to logging seating position, point of center of gravity and speed, torque of each wheels with accuracy. With SS01, user can test many seating potision rapidly and get quantitative data and know how they fiscally feel that at the same time.
It is challenging to formulate specifications for many applications and to design structures to achieve them, so we have repeated prototypes and improvements.
The project started in August 2017 and the SS01 was made in August 2018. In 2020, SS01 is used for medical research and the development is going.
This project had been started from the development of racing wheelchair for Paralympic since 2017. Through the development, we getting to understood the importance of putting the athlete in correct position in perfect fit with the seat. The seating position affected to their record so obviously with our prototype. And the obvious data made an experienced athlete understandable for us. The communication about wheelchair development became much easier for each other. then we joined to "furo", the specialist in robotics, and started to design this system for not only for the atletes but for anyone.
The prototype was manufactured and tested repeatedly in order to improve the practicality of the product. Experienced wheelchair athletes participated in the verification, and the specification requirements of the SS01 were extracted after repeated testing and recording for the purpose of setting the seat position of the wheelchair. As a result, the SS01 was born as a highly versatile testing system, and is still being improved by testing wheelchair users on a daily basis. It has been devised for applications where a large amount of data can be acquired with little effort and the structure can be diverted.
Through the development of wheelchairs and para-sport equipment, the design team have been exposed to the fact that individual seating can greatly affect a person's ability to do so.Since able-bodied people also spend a lot of time sitting, they felt the possibility that there would be many benefits if seating could be analyzed quickly and appropriately and reflected in people's lives.
