Multidimensional Glass Installation for Illuminata Art Glass Design
Fractured. The title alone demonstrates the current modern society that is fragmented, broken, and distracting as people consume life in byte-sized morsels. The gold and silver diamond represent precious life. Sometimes people have scars or broken pieces that they mend, seeking the reflection in the bent and broken mirrors keeps them on track. They follow the lighted beacon through life's challenges. Julie Conway, owner of Illuminata Art Glass Design is a glass artist and lighting designer renowned for her spectacular environments with blown glass and light.

I enjoy creating spectacular environments with blown glass and light. Chrome mirror coatings and 24K gold refract and reflect light in the bend of each diamond. The diamond represents us, our precious life. Sometimes we have scars or broken pieces that we mend, seeking our reflection in the bent and broken mirrors keeps us on track. We follow the lighted beacon through life's challenges.

Fractured is a wall/ room installation with 19 x Individual parts of hot blown glass at various sizes from 254-650 mm long. Each glass component is finished with 24K hammered gold leaf or silver chrome mirror. Broken mirror, cables, lighting elements are included.
The challenge is always the risk of blowing glass into forms that I’ve have not tried before, then suspending them overhead!! Assembling and installation onsite to fit the room can only be imagined so far in design, then translated into the real 3D world. Breaking large mirrors added to the risk, and discovery of space shuttle tape for mirror pieces that could be removed from the wall, but hold up with strength. All came together onsite for the installation at the museum for the first time.
Fractured was a feature site-specific installation in the Bellevue Arts Museum in Washington State for the Glass Biennial "Glasstastic" displayed from November 9, 2018 – April 14, 2019 The piece is also the recipient Winner of LIT Awards Artisan Blown Glass 2018. Light in Theory Awards.
I loved watching museum visitors interact with this installation. Taking selfies and finding inspiration in the works that reflect themselves. I usually design and install functional works for residential or hospitality locations, that are attractive and design oriented. Fractured was built from an artist statement and interactive theme.
Forming hot glass is taking molten sand at 2100F out of a furnace and filling the glass with our breath! It is nothing short of an alchemical process that is still quite impressive after 5000 years of history. Glass is utilized as a transcendent material in countless forms.
Fractured is a statement on finding ourselves in our modern society. It is challenging to find our reflection in the mirror, pulled in many directions, focused on many angles, and feeling like we are on a tight wire. Finding peace and tranquility in our ever demanding world is a challenge. “I say— follow the light.” — Julie Conway
