Unique Properties
This is an official trailer poster designed for a 2021 Chinese animated fantasy adventure film "Master Ji Gong", directed by Liu Zhijiang and Qiao Yu. Based on its long history and rich cultural heritage, Chinese ink and Chinese traditional elements have been extensively used here to create an oriental poetic and mysterious ambiance, which is of eastern aesthetical character came into being.

Production Technology
Dragon and the monk with a red kasaya, a patchwork outer vestment and a palm-leaf fan are prototypes in this animated film, rendered to the present posture and expression through CINEMA 4D, ink was created with water tested on different materials of different textures, such as rice paper, hard paper or cloths in order to receive the best natural and artistic result. Combine each part of the elements naturally though Photoshop.
Design Challenge
One of the creative challenges during the project is the control of ink effect. In order to combine the monk and dragon naturally, ink was created with water tested on different materials of different textures, such as rice paper, hard paper or cloths, etc. The advantage of ink lies in its fluidity and flexibility, while it results in more uncertainty.
Project Duration
The project started in April 2019 in Beijing, and finished in June 2019 in Beijing, the poster was released in June 2019.
Operation Flow

Inspiration
Inspired by Zhao Zhixin, a poet of the Qing Dynasty, "Poetry is like a magic dragon. You can see its head but not its tail, or just a claw and a scale in the cloud" as he wrote in "The Record of Talking about Dragons", it can be said that apart from Chinese ink, it is difficult to find any other material that can accurately capture the romantic charm of the dragon and the deity in the movie, and the relationship between the monk and the dragon, the beauty of ambiguity, the connotation deeply rooted in as well.
