Case for Chateau La Grace Dieu des Prieurs
Wine and Chess Case combines a wine case with a chess game. When the cover of the case is turned upside down, it reveals a chessboard alternating red and cream squares corresponding to the brand colors of the producer - Chateau La Grace Dieu des Prieurs and its wine collection. The leather covering the external faces is also of a brand red color. The case is functional: it contains 6 bottles that are safely nestled in the special niches. There are also two spaces for the bags with chess pieces inside. The aim of this design is sustainability and the creation of 2nd life for luxury packaging.

This design is unique because the wine case containing 6 bottles, is combined with a chess game. When the cover of the case is turned upside down, it reveals a chessboard alternating red and cream squares. There are two spaces for the bags with the chess pieces inside the box. It’s a functional packaging: each bottle is safely nestled in the dedicated niche. It offers amateurs an occasion to celebrate timeless game while savouring wine. This packaging will be used for many years after wine is drunk.

The main challenge was to make an item equally excellent as 1) wine packaging (ergonomic, light, safe for bottles, good for nature),2) beautiful luxury object,3) chess game (players’ friendly). The first pieces produced for this packaging apparently were too light and played a more decorative role rather than practical. After receiving feedback from chess players, it was decided to change pieces. Each piece now has a weighting agent inside. It makes them stable and comfortable for making moves.
The project started in 2016 in Saint-Emilion, France when the owner of the winery has got an idea to create luxury wine packaging that will never be disposed. The first version was handcrafted. The currently applied object - Wine&Chess - is a modified version of the first design. It was finished in November 2021 in Bidart, France. It was presented as a special prize for the World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen in December 2021 after he defended his title at the World Chess Championship in Dubai.
Wine&Chess is the wine case for 6 bottles. It combines the functionality of the wine case with the chess game. The cover bears the logo for brand recognition. However, when it turned upside down, it reveals a chessboard. There are bags with chess pieces inside the case. It offers amateurs an occasion to enjoy playing the eternal game and sipping wine. The idea of the operation is that the case is not used as packaging anymore. It’s used as a chess set and stylish item and won’t be thrown away.
The idea of a square configuration of 6 btls case that transforms into a chessboard was created by the owner of the winery as well as the color code for the board and pieces. The next step was to find the right materials that would be solid, not too heavy, sustainable. Laurent Prosperi and Frederic Chaput have chosen a wooden MDF Valchromat for the box structure. Red leather for the external faces was a natural choice: Chateau has another luxury packaging for 3 btls where this material is used.
Andrei Filatov, owner of Chateau La Grace Dieu des Prieurs, created the design. He is passionate about chess since his earliest childhood. The principal idea is to combine two passions - wine and chess, and create the packaging that will never be thrown away after drinking wine. The colors of the pieces correspond to the colors of the chessboard. The red color of the squares was chosen following the popular design of chessboards in the early 20th century. This period inspired designer because he is an admirer of chess champion Alexander Alekhine who played at this time.
