The inception of the“ Tree in a Bottle” signifies a pivotal turning point in the industry. As designers of the product packaging, we have boldly innovated in the outer packaging, adopting fully decomposable materials, allowing each product barrel to return to nature and seamlessly integrate into the Earth's embrace.
Tree in a Bottle, eco-friendly, sustainable, germinating, packaging
The“ Tree in a Bottle” is encased in a plant-based, biodegradable packaging, incorporating PMU inorganic biodegradable material technology. This innovative approach ensures that the packaging naturally decomposes into fertilizer without the need for any chemical treatment, leaving no impact on the environment. The label of the “Tree in a Bottle” is crafted from a rather special plant seed paper. Once the user has finished with the product, they can simply place the label directly into the biodegradable packaging barrel or into the soil. The label will naturally decompose, and the seeds within will germinate and grow, embodying the cycle of life and sustainability.
In this project, as the packaging design team, our greatest challenge was not just to create a container that merely looks environmentally friendly, but to pursue a genuine, deep-seated commitment to eco-friendliness. We understood that the essence of the packaging was equally important, for it carries not just a product, but our pledge to the future of our planet. Facing the packaging of a vehicle lubricant, we knew that if the lubricant contained substances harmful to the environment, no matter how eco-friendly the packaging, it would fail to truly honor nature. Our dream of the Tree-in-a-Bottle could not take root in reality, as seeds cannot sprout in a barrel that once held harmful substances. To uphold this original intention, we engaged in profound dialogue and collaboration with the brand principal, ultimately selecting an eco-friendly, fully synthetic gasoline engine oil. This is not only the first product of the United Co-Creation for Sustainability Plan but also a paragon of excellence in both performance and environmental attributes. It has not only won widespread recognition from users but also meets the stringent standards of API SP and GF-6A. With its advanced low-sulfur formulation, it effectively reduces the formation of sludge and deposits, keeping the engine clean, enhancing fuel efficiency, and reducing exhaust emissions. All of this is to ensure that our Tree-in-a-Bottle packaging is not just a concept but a living embodiment of our environmental ethos, turning every choice into a tender caress for the Earth.
Our project commenced on October 8th, 2023, and wrapped up exactly two months later on December 8th ,2023. The entire journey unfolded in the vibrant city of Beijing, China.
Empty the remaining lubricant oil from the barrel and ensure the inside is clean. Carefully tear off the seed paper label from the barrel according to the instructions on it. Gently sprinkle the seeds from the seed paper label onto the soil surface inside the barrel. Water appropriately and place in a sunny spot as per the instructions on the seed paper packaging. Over time, the seeds will germinate and grow, eventually forming a potted plant within the barrel. This design not only reduces the environmental impact of plastic waste but also provides users with a simple and innovative way to transform discarded packaging into a touch of green in their lives. Through this method, users not only participate in environmental actions but also enjoy the pleasure of planting and caring for plants.
Our design draws inspiration from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. We have depicted the Toucans of the South American Amazon rainforest on the barrel using embossing technology, making the beauty and vulnerability of these endangered species palpable. The survival of Toucans is threatened by climate change, and protecting them is tantamount to safeguarding our "lungs of the Earth." Through this design, we hope to raise awareness of the importance of ecological balance and biodiversity
