The design process incorporated paper prototyping to refine structural integrity and user interaction. Multiple iterations of hand-cut and laser-cut prototypes tested the interlocking mechanism of the triangular boxes, ensuring seamless assembly into the hexagonal form. High-resolution photography documented the prototypes, capturing material textures, color accuracy, and spatial relationships. This visual analysis informed refinements in dieline precision, typography application, and final production feasibility.
The greatest challenge was balancing individuality and unity within the packaging system. Ensuring each tea’s distinctiveness while maintaining a cohesive structure required extensive typographic and color research. Structurally, engineering the interlocking hexagonal form demanded precision in dieline development. Externally, production constraints influenced material choices, while market research on contemporary consumer preferences shaped design decisions to align with modern expectations.
This project started in April 2024 in the USA and finished in February 2025 in the USA.
Each tea is housed in a uniquely designed triangular box, creating a strong individual presence while maintaining a unified system. The six triangular boxes are engineered to interlock seamlessly into a striking hexagonal form, reinforcing a sense of connection between flavors while enhancing both shelf presence and user experience. This innovative structural approach not only improves functionality and visual impact but also elevates the packaging into a modular, interactive design that invites engagement. By prioritizing both aesthetic appeal and practicality, this redesign redefines how consumers interact with and appreciate their tea selection.
This project employed user-centered design research to enhance packaging functionality and appeal. The objective was to create a contemporary tea packaging system that emphasizes flavor differentiation and unity. A mixed-method approach combined market analysis, visual studies, and prototyping. Data collection included consumer surveys, competitor analysis, and material testing. Research tools included digital design software, physical prototyping, and user feedback sessions. Participants consisted of tea consumers, retail experts, and packaging designers. Results revealed that consumers value both clear functional labeling and aesthetically engaging designs. Insights showed that bold typography and a modular structure improve brand recognition and user interaction. The final interlocking hexagonal form not only enhances shelf appeal but also reinforces a sense of connection among the flavors. This research informs modern packaging design by balancing visual storytelling with structural innovation. It has practical implications for businesses seeking to enhance consumer engagement, while also contributing to broader discussions in design about modularity, branding, and user experience.
Inspired by Bigelow’s tea series, this project reimagines its packaging to emphasize the core ingredients that define each flavor. The redesign highlights the unique characteristics of each tea while maintaining a cohesive visual identity. Through abstract forms, ingredient-inspired patterns, and refined typography, the packaging will celebrate both individuality and unity. This project explores design and storytelling, using packaging to enhance the tea-drinking experience and deepen consumer connection to each blend.
